The world''s largest maker of batteries for electric cars, China''s CATL, claims it will slash the cost of its batteries by up to 50% this year, as a price war kicks off with the second largest maker in China, BYD subsidiary
Joint ventures with Chinese battery makers could become the norm; Europe''s battery pipeline capacity out to 2030 has fallen by 176 GWh in 2024, according to data firm Benchmark Minerals.
A second factor has also driven down the price of batteries: demand. Chinese Gigafactories produced 51% of their maximum battery capacity in 2022. By 2023, this had fallen to 43% .
This, however, has led to a reliance on battery imports from China, the global leader in EV battery production. If maintained, the EU''s dependence on Chinese batteries would raise downside risks for EV manufacturing in Europe in case of geopolitical or global trade shocks, according to a new analysis by Morningstar DBRS.

CATL, China''s leading battery manufacturer, is noted for its first overseas production site in Germany, which began in 2023. However, it faces challenges in Europe due to high costs, regulatory barriers, and achieving profitability. CATL is closely watched for its operational success in Europe, which influences other Chinese battery firms.
To avoid a 21st-century replay of that scenario, the EU in 2018 launched a Battery Action Plan, to increase Europe''s battery production capacity. Realizing they couldn''t beat China on price, the Europeans resolved that their batteries would
In an interview with German broadcaster n-tv, Bernd Lange, the chair of the trade committee of the European Parliament, said that the EU''s special tariffs on China-made EVs may be off the table.According to Lange, the EU and China “are close to an agreement: China could commit to offering e-cars in the EU at a minimum price.”

The likes of CATL and BYD Co. have a years-long technology head start and are selling batteries at unbeatable prices. European rivals are grappling with scaling up production, and sluggish EV sales in the region have prompted their automaking customers to walk back electrification plans and cancel battery orders.
In the first seven months of this year, the SNE data found that 91% of the batteries the company sold were NCM batteries, not the cheaper ones. Chinese battery maker CATL and European carmaker Stellantis have set up a joint venture to build an EV battery plant in northern Spain. The companies said on Tuesday they will invest 4.1 billion euros ($4.33 billion) in a factory in Zaragoza.
Companies in China faced fierce competition this year. These conditions resulted in falling battery prices and lower battery margins, forcing many battery manufacturers to enter new markets, including energy storage, while also eyeing overseas markets willing to pay more for batteries. The industry has also benefitted from low raw material prices.
Besides Northvolt, Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Stellantis NV have stalled work on two battery plants in Germany and Italy, while Volkswagen has said its European cell factories should take longer to reach capacity. UK battery startup Britishvolt closed for business last year as well.
China supplies about 80% of the world's lithium-ion batteries and is home to six of the world's 10 largest EV battery makers, according to BloombergNEF. The country's rapid expansion — its cell production capacity is already much higher than global EV demand — has depressed prices, raising the bar for new entrants.
China's battery makers have cornered the market in lithium iron phosphate batteries. But they aren't the only game in town. Tesla electric cars have long been powered by batteries from Japan's Panasonic and South Korea's LG.
That's why Chinese companies such as CATL have all but monopolized the market on another chemistry, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. These batteries are cheaper, as they have no cobalt. They have other benefits too: a longer usable life and less risk of fire than traditional lithium battery chemistries.
Eleven out of 16 planned European-led battery factories have been delayed or canceled, according to a Bloomberg News analysis. Meanwhile, 10 of 13 projects in the region by Asian manufacturers such as China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. and South Korea's Samsung SDI are on track.
